A diamond is formed by nature and therefore each one has different and unique qualities created by its natural composition. These qualities are enhanced by the finish and cut of a diamond. At Peter Franklin Jewelers, most diamonds weighing over ½ carat come with a grading report from an independent laboratory. Any diamond purchase from Peter Franklin Jewelers gives you the assurance that we have inspected and graded the diamond and agree with the grade it was given or agree with the analysis of the independent laboratory.
Below is more information on diamonds including the Four C’s and a guide to the different diamond shapes.
The Four C’s: Diamonds are selected and graded using the Four C’s: Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat weight.
Cut: We feel that cut is the most important of the Four C’s. When a diamond is cut with good proportions, the light is reflected internally from one facet to another and dispersed out of the top of the diamond. The diamond’s precise proportions capture the light and release its brilliance and fire. Diamond cutters train for years to be able to capture the brilliance of each diamond they cut. At Peter Franklin Jewelers, we use only the best diamond cutters in order to bring the best diamonds to our guests.
Color: The purist and rarest diamonds that the earth creates are virtually colorless. Even though most diamonds appear colorless to the untrained eye, there are subtle differences in color. The closer a diamond is to colorless, the more value it will have. A diamond will range in color from a ‘D’, totally colorless to a ‘Z’, obviously yellow.
Clarity: The clarity of a diamond is graded by the inclusions that are found in the diamond. An inclusion could be a crystallization or trace mineral spots from when the diamond was formed. A good cutter will take a rough diamond and cut it so that it has the fewest number of inclusions. It is possible to find inclusions in almost every diamond. Peter Franklin Jewelers, as well as independent laboratories, study the size, location, and number of inclusions to put a clarity grade on a diamond. To be considered ‘flawless’, a diamond must have no inclusions that can be seen under 10 power magnification. Flawless diamonds are extremely rare.
There are three ways that the clarity of a diamond affects the stone:
- Visible inclusions may affect the enjoyment of the diamond’s beauty.
- Light may not reflect as well if there is a large inclusion that reduces the fire and brilliance.
- If an inclusion is located on the edge and breaks the surface, the diamond may be less durable.
Carat weight: A carat is the gemologist’s standard measure of a diamond (or gemstone’s) weight. A carat is divided into 100 parts, called points. For example a 50 point diamond is also called a ½ carat.
The Four C’s greatly affect the value and price of a diamond. Peter Franklin Jeweler’s staff will work with you to determine which of the Four C’s is most important to you and will show you a variety of diamonds so that you can make an informed purchase.
Diamond Shapes
Diamonds are cut into many different shapes. The most common is the round, or brilliant cut, so named because it reflects the most amount of light. The square, or princess, cut is also very popular. In addition, diamonds are cut into oval, emerald, marquise, pear, or heart shapes. The graphic below provides you with a quick guide to the most popular diamond shapes.
